TSHD Suction and Jetting
Drag arm suction, drag head jetting and deck flushing on a trailing suction hopper dredger.
How the system fits together
On a TSHD the drag arm moves with the sea while the pump pulls a vacuum through it, and the drag head is jetting at pressure at the same time. Two hoses, two completely different specifications, and the common mistake is selecting both on bore size.
What goes where
Drag arm suction
Suction hose rated -0.1 to 1.0 MPa, reinforced against collapse, with internal steel rings absorbing pump vibration before it reaches the arm mountings.
Drag head jetting
Jet water hose in 100-400 mm bore at 0.5-2.5 MPa, built around pressure capability rather than abrasion, in modular sections that integrate into the existing flushing system.
Deck pipework
Expansion joints taking up movement between fixed deck runs and damping vibration into the structure.
Hopper discharge
Discharge hose and floating line where the vessel pumps ashore, on flange drilling matched to the shore connection.
