Overview
A PE float is what keeps an HDPE or steel dredging pipeline on the surface. This version adds a location slot: a moulded profile on the inside that mates with the pipe so the float cannot rotate or slide along it. The shell is polyethylene, the inside is filled with high-density closed-cell polyurethane foam, and the combination gives impact resistance and buoyancy that does not depend on a sealed air space staying sealed.
Who it is for
Contractors floating HDPE or steel dredging pipe who have had floats migrate along the line and need positive location.
Key benefits
- Location slot fits the pipeline precisely, preventing rotation and displacement
- Seamless weld-free PE shell eliminates the leakage risk a welded float carries
- High-density closed-cell polyurethane foam fill for stable buoyancy
- Resists seawater, chemicals and oil without rusting
- Performs in harsh environments including ice zones without cracking
- Light weight and low maintenance cut transport and installation cost
What goes wrong without it
Floats that slide or rotate along the pipe leave parts of the line unsupported and bunch buoyancy where it is not needed.
A steel float rusts and, once its welded shell is holed, floods and stops floating. A seamless PE shell has no weld to fail.
Air-filled floats lose all buoyancy from a single puncture. Closed-cell PU foam keeps floating even when the shell is damaged.
Construction and technical features
- Outer shell: polyethylene, seamless and weld-free
- Core: high-density closed-cell polyurethane (PU) foam
- Location slot structure for secure fit to the pipeline
- Clamp-type bolt holes for assembly around the pipe
- Buoyancy range from 150 kg to 5000 kg per unit
Quality control
- Appearance inspection: surface free from cracks, bubbles, dents and deformation, with uniform colour and no visible impurities
- Dimensional accuracy: outer diameter, inner diameter, wall thickness and mould seam deviation checked against specification to ensure correct pipe matching
- Structural integrity: position, quantity and strength of clamp-type bolt holes verified, and sealing performance confirmed after assembly
- Physical performance testing including density and buoyancy verification
- Third-party inspection can be arranged on request
Where it is used
- Floating HDPE discharge line where floats must stay at fixed spacing
- Steel pipe floating line requiring positive location on the pipe
- Offshore and nearshore dredging pipelines exposed to current and wave action
- Cold-climate works where impact and ice contact are expected
Customisation
- Inner diameter 110-1200 mm matched to the pipe being floated
- Outer diameter 500-2300 mm and length 500-2500 mm set by the buoyancy required
- Buoyancy specified from 150 kg to 5000 kg per unit
- Location slot profile matched to the pipeline
How it compares
Choose the location slot version when the float must not move relative to the pipe, which matters on lines under current, in waves or on long spans where spacing has to stay even. Where the pipe is clamped by other means or spacing is less critical, the version without a location slot is simpler to fit. Both use the same PE shell and PU foam core and cover the same size and buoyancy ranges.
Selection and use notes
- Match the float inner diameter to the actual pipe outer diameter, not the nominal size
- Calculate the number of floats from the flooded weight of the line, not the empty weight
- Check bolt hole alignment and clamp torque after the first days of operation
- Inspect the shell for impact damage; foam fill keeps the float working but damage should be logged
Questions buyers ask
What buoyancy can one float provide?
From 150 kg up to 5000 kg per unit, depending on the size selected.
What pipe sizes does it fit?
Inner diameter from 110 mm to 1200 mm, with outer diameter 500-2300 mm and length 500-2500 mm.
Why choose PE over a steel float?
PE floats resist seawater, chemicals and oil, do not rust, and have a service life significantly longer than steel floats. The shell is seamless and weld-free, so there is no weld to leak.
What happens if the shell is damaged?
The float is filled with high-density closed-cell polyurethane foam rather than air, so buoyancy does not depend on the shell staying sealed.
Will it work in cold conditions?
It is not prone to permanent deformation or cracking under collision or compression and performs in harsh environments such as ice zones.
How is it fixed to the pipe?
It clamps around the pipe with bolt holes, and the location slot mates with the pipeline to prevent rotation and displacement.
