A Guide to Dredging Hose Systems and How They Are Classified

Dredging hoses are the flexible lifelines of marine engineering systems, carrying mixtures of water, sand, silt and gravel. They can be classified by function, by structure and by buoyancy.

What dredging hoses do

Dredging hoses are the flexible lifelines of marine engineering systems, designed to transport mixtures of water, sand, silt and gravel under demanding conditions. Based on function, structure and buoyancy, dredging rubber hoses fall into a small number of clear categories.

Classification by function

By function the main split is between discharge hose, which carries spoil away from the pump under positive pressure, and suction hose, which sits on the vacuum side and must resist collapse. Jetting hose is a third function again, carrying water at pressure rather than slurry.

Classification by buoyancy

By buoyancy, hoses are either self-floating, carrying a buoyant interlayer in the wall, or non-floating, needing PE floats or pontoons to run overwater. This distinction decides how a line is assembled far more than bore size does.
