What this group covers
HDPE pipe is specified where steel's weight and corrosion maintenance cost more than its rigidity is worth. It is made from virgin PE100-grade or higher polyethylene, needs no anti-corrosion treatment, can be handled and connected without lifting equipment, and flexes enough to follow a gully crossing or a shifting riverbed instead of needing fabricated bends.
How to choose within this group
Check the pressure duty first. HDPE tops out at 1.5 MPa working pressure and 800 mm outside diameter; beyond that the line needs steel pipe.
Choose flanged pipe if the line is reconfigured between phases and sections have to come apart without fusion equipment.
Choose plain-ended pipe for long permanent runs joined in the field, where flange hardware at every section adds cost without adding value.
If the run is overwater, size PE floats from the flooded weight of the line.
