Air Movement Across a Supermarket Sales Floor

Supermarket and retail operators. Clients are not named at their request; the installation photographs are our own.

Project Challenge

The Building and the Problem

Sales floors where the air conditioning cools the zone near the entrance and the units, and leaves the back of the store warm and still. Occupancy swings sharply through the day, and customers who are uncomfortable spend less time on the floor.

Customer pain points

  • Large areas with poor air conditioning coverage, where the system cannot reach the whole floor
  • Huge electricity consumption raising the daily operating cost without solving the dead zones
  • Short-term dense crowds leaving the air turbid, with noticeable odour and a falling retention rate of people through the store
  • Fixtures and lighting occupying the ceiling, so fan positions are constrained
Our Solution

What Was Installed and Why

HVLS ceiling fans positioned over the main sales floor to spread a moving airflow layer across the whole area, with portable units at aisle ends where the ceiling was committed to lighting and signage, and commercial ceiling fans in the café seating area where the fan is close to customers.

1

One fan per zone rather than units per aisle

A large ceiling fan pushes a large volume of airflow to the ground and forms a moving airflow layer, which is what reaches the back of the store.

2

Set point raised rather than cooling replaced

The fans run alongside the existing air conditioning, which lets the set point rise while the floor still feels comfortable.

3

Positions coordinated with fixtures

Reflected ceiling plans were used so the fans clear lighting, signage and sprinklers, which in retail constrains positions more than the structure does.

4

Finish matched to the interior

Blade and housing colour follow the specification on production orders, which matters when the fan is in every customer's line of sight.

Quality Control

What Was Checked Before Despatch

  • Finish inspection on units destined for public areas
  • Blade dynamic balancing and mechanical retention features checked at final assembly
  • Functional test with the controller fitted before crating

Final result

Air moving across the whole sales floor including the areas the air conditioning never reached, with the fans visible but quiet at under 38 dB.

Customer benefit

A store that stays comfortable at peak occupancy, with air conditioning running at a higher set point and a lower daily operating cost behind it.

Questions

Questions About This Installation

It will be visible, which is why blade and housing finish can follow your specification. It will not be audible over normal store noise, because both HVLS ranges run under 38 dB at the fan.

In most retail buildings yes, and the fans are installed to work with it. The saving comes from raising the set point while the floor still feels comfortable, not from switching the cooling off.

Send a reflected ceiling plan. In retail the services and the fixtures constrain fan positions far more than the roof structure does, and positions are marked against them before anything is ordered.

That is where the commercial range fits: 2.4 m to 3.7 m, close to customers, quiet and finished for a public room. Include the blades in the regular cleaning round because they collect grease over time.

A Building Like This One

Send a photograph of the roof structure and the building dimensions. That is usually enough to start.
