Cooling a Vehicle Service Centre Without Blocking the Bays

Project Challenge
The Building and the Problem
A long service hall with two-post lifts down both sides and a clear aisle for vehicle movement. Nothing could be left standing on the floor, because the bay has to be free for the car, and technicians work under raised vehicles where air movement at floor level is useless.
Customer pain points
- Floor fans had to be moved for every vehicle, which meant in practice they were not used
- Technicians working under a raised vehicle sit in the stillest air in the building
- Exhaust fumes and heat from the workshop accumulated along the roof line
- The building is a leased unit, so roof work had to be minimal and reversible
Our Solution
What Was Installed and Why
HVLS ceiling fans positioned down the centre of the hall, clear of the lift travel, so the air column reaches the working plane under the raised vehicles. Portable stand fans with 45 degree up and down tilt were added at the bays where the ceiling was committed to lighting and service reels.

The tilt is what makes the portable fans work
Under a raised vehicle the useful air is above head height and angled. A fan that cannot be aimed simply blows across the floor.

Ceiling fans down the centre line
Positioned so the lifts and the vehicle travel stay clear, which in a service hall constrains the layout more than the roof structure does.

Minimal fixings for a leased building
The mounting was detailed against the existing structure with the loads stated, which is what a landlord asks for before approving.

Wheeled units for the bays that change
Bays used for tyre work or bodywork change function through the week, so a portable fan was the correct format there.
Quality Control
What Was Checked Before Despatch
- Every stand fan pre-installed and commissioned at the factory, so the site work was positioning and a socket
- IP55 fans and IP66 controllers specified for a workshop with oil mist and washdown
- Tilt mechanism and caster function checked at final inspection before despatch
Final result
Air movement at the working plane in the lift bays, a clear floor for vehicle handling, and portable units that can be rolled out of a bay in seconds rather than carried.

Because the ceiling in a service hall is committed to lighting, service reels and extraction, and the bays change function through the week. A mix of fixed and portable is the honest answer in that building type.
It puts the air on the working plane under a raised vehicle. Without it the air runs across the floor, which is the one place nobody is working.
Usually, provided the mounting can be detailed against the existing structure with the loads at the fixing point. That is what a landlord asks for, and we issue it with the layout.
The portable ranges are IP55 with IP66 controllers, which is why they are specified for industrial environments. Keep the guard and blade clean on the same cycle as the rest of the bay.
