Industry Application

AODD Pumps For Paints, Inks And Coatings Transfer

Paint, ink, resin and adhesive transfer into batching, filling and circulation lines are duties where the pump must handle shear-sensitive materials, prevent pigment settling, and resist solvent attack. The wrong pump causes product loss, color inconsistency, and frequent cleaning.

Pain Points

What Goes Wrong In Paint And Ink Transfer

Three failure modes are common in this industry and lead to production delays and product waste.

The Pump Shears The Product

High shear from centrifugal or positive displacement pumps breaks down resin structures and disperses pigments, leading to inconsistent color and poor film formation. A diaphragm pump moves fluid with low shear and gentle action, preserving the product integrity.

The Elastomer Degrades In Solvent

Solvents in paints and inks attack standard rubber and nitrile seals. PTFE faced diaphragms and PVDF or Santoprene seats resist solvent degradation, ensuring longer service life and fewer failures.

The Pump Cannot Handle Dry Runs Or Dead Head

Batch transfer ends with the tank empty. A pump that cannot run dry or dead head safely will overheat, fail prematurely, or require constant monitoring. AODD pumps handle both conditions as standard operation.

What Buyers Need

What Paint And Ink Buyers Actually Specify

The specification is based on the fluid, the transfer method, and the maintenance plan. It is settled in the model code before the pump is built.

  • Wetted materials that resist solvents and prevent contamination, such as 316 stainless steel for inks and resins, and aluminum for non-corrosive paints
  • PTFE faced diaphragms and PTFE or PVDF seats to withstand aggressive solvents and maintain seal integrity
  • No electric motor in the area, so the pump runs on plant air and eliminates electrical hazards
  • Dry running and dead heading tolerated as normal operation, not as an exception
  • Self priming with a real dry lift to empty drums and IBCs from ground level
  • Published drawings and part lists so the plant can maintain the correct spares before a shutdown

Typical Duties

Typical Duties On A Paints And Inks Site

01

Batching And Formulation

Transfer of resin and pigment slurry into a mixer, where the pump must handle solids up to 6.4 mm and maintain product consistency.

02

Filling And Packaging

Transfer of ink or paint into containers, where the pump must run dry at the end of each fill and deliver consistent flow without pulsation.

03

Circulation And Recirculation

Continuous flow through a mixing tank or filter, where the pump must run for long periods without overheating or failing.

04

Line Flush And Changeover

Flushing between color batches, where the pump must handle air, liquid, and air again without losing function or requiring manual intervention.

How We Work

How We Get From Enquiry To Pump

Four steps. The first one is the only one that matters, and it is the one most enquiries skip.

  1. Name The Fluid Properly

Paint, ink, resin or adhesive, with solvent type and concentration. The same base with different solvents requires different wetted materials and elastomers.

  2. Fix The Wetted Materials

We set the body, seat, ball and diaphragm against the fluid, then check the hardware and connection thread, since bolts and unions see the spill even if they do not see the fluid.

  3. Set The Duty Point

Flow at your discharge head with your available air pressure. That is what decides the port size, not the size of the pipe you already have.

  4. Agree The Spares Package

One air section kit and one fluid section kit coded to your elastomer choice, so the first failure is a fifteen minute job rather than a three week wait.

Paints Inks And Coatings Pump FAQ

Which pump should I use for a solvent-based ink?

Use a 316 stainless steel pump with PTFE faced diaphragms and PTFE or PVDF seats. The 1-1/2 inch and 1 inch models are rated for 120 psi and handle up to 6.4 mm solids, suitable for ink with minor particulates.

Can the pump run dry when emptying a drum?

Yes. All Nuodean AODD pumps are designed for dry running and dead heading. The 2 inch aluminum pump has a dry suction lift of 8.3 meters, allowing ground-level drum emptying without priming.

What if the paint contains settled pigment?

The 2 inch aluminum pump passes 6.4 mm solids and is suitable for pigmented paints. For heavier solids, the flap valve pump passes 50 mm, but it is not listed here as a recommended model for this duty.

How do I prevent color contamination between batches?

Flush the pump and lines between batches. The 2 inch high pressure triple diaphragm pump handles 6.9 bar pressure and is ideal for long line transfer with consistent flow and minimal residue.

Are the pumps suitable for a clean room environment?

They are air driven with no electric motor, which reduces electrical risks. The 316 stainless steel models are suitable for clean environments where material compatibility and low particle shedding are required.
