In a flue gas path the fin is attacked from two directions at once - metal temperature that releases a mechanical bond, and ash that blinds the gaps between fins. Geometry, not material, is what solves it.
Four geometries cover the range: spiral for clean gas, H and HH for ash-laden economizer duty, longitudinal for viscous fluids and low velocity gas, and studs for slagging furnace sections.
All four are steel fin on steel tube, so the weld metallurgy stays simple and the assembly can be part of a pressure boundary.
