Most tube failures we are asked to replace were grade selection decisions, not manufacturing defects. This is the sequence we work through with a buyer before a grade is fixed.

From Enquiry to Delivery

Seven steps, each with a decision that belongs to it. Nothing is left to be discovered at assembly.

Stream dataComposition, temperature, velocity and chloride content are collected for both sides of the tube.
Mechanism checkThe likely mechanism is identified - pitting, chloride stress corrosion cracking, reducing acid attack, creep or erosion.
Family selectionAustenitic for general duty, duplex for chloride plus strength, nickel alloy for reducing acids, high temperature and seawater.
Grade selectionWithin the family, grade is fixed on PREN, stabilisation or molybdenum content as the mechanism requires.
SpecificationThe ASTM or ASME standard is named with the grade, because test and heat treatment requirements differ between them.
Testing scopeIntergranular corrosion, hardness and chemical analysis are added to the test plan where the specification calls for them.
DocumentationCertificates are issued against the named standard and travel with the shipment.

Corrosion Resistant Tube Selection Questions

What data do you need to recommend a grade?

Stream composition, temperature, velocity and chloride content for both sides of the tube.

Is duplex always cheaper than a nickel alloy?

Per kilogram, yes, by a wide margin. That is why the mechanism matters - duplex in reducing acid service is a false economy.

Do you issue certificates against the named standard?

Yes. Name the specification with the grade, because B163, B622 and API 5CRA carry different test and heat treatment requirements.

Can you add intergranular corrosion testing?

Yes, we have intergranular corrosion equipment in house. Ask for it with the order.
