Thickness and Tolerance Control for Thin Strip

Thickness is the specification buyers argue about most, because it is the one that stops a press line the fastest. This page sets out how the Wuxi plant holds it and what you need to state so the tolerance is quoted correctly.

Why This Matters

The Problem Behind the Specification

At 0.5 mm a two micron drift is a rounding error. At 0.05 mm it is four percent of the section and it changes how the strip forms, springs back and welds. That is why thin gauge cannot be treated as ordinary cold rolled material with a smaller number on the order.

Yongxin rolls this band on a 4-Hi 650 mm reversing mill imported from COSMEC in Italy and a 20-Hi 650 mm Sendzimir mill imported from the USA, backed by 4-Hi and 6-Hi 650 mm mills and a temper rolling mill. The 20-Hi configuration exists specifically because small work rolls supported by a cluster are what let a mill hold gauge at very thin section.

Tolerance is agreed before production. Where the customer states a tolerance we roll to it. Where no tolerance is stated we follow the Yongxin standard tolerance, and that standard is confirmed in writing with the quotation so there is no assumption left in the order.

Process Coverage

How This Is Handled From Design to After Sales

  1. Design and Enquiry

Nominal thickness, tolerance band and the measuring method are agreed. Tell us whether your tolerance is a total band or plus and minus from nominal.

  2. Material Selection

Grade and incoming feedstock condition are checked, because a feedstock that is already out of flatness limits what the mill can correct.

  3. Sampling

A sample is rolled to the target gauge and sent for your approval before bulk production starts.

  4. Production

Rolling passes are set to reach the ordered gauge without over reduction, on the mill best suited to the section.

  5. Levelling

The stretch bending leveller and temper mill remove residual shape so the measured thickness is not distorted by coil set.

  6. Inspection

Thickness is verified with the ordered measuring method and the result recorded before release.

  7. Packing

Coil weight and inner diameter are set so the strip is not marked or deformed in transit.

  8. After Sales

If a delivered coil measures outside the agreed band, send the readings and the measuring position and we will trace it back through the process record.

FAQ

Thickness and Tolerance Control FAQ

What tolerance can Yongxin hold
It depends on the gauge, the width and the grade. State the tolerance you actually need with your enquiry and we will confirm whether it is feasible before quoting rather than after.
What happens if I do not state a tolerance
We follow the Yongxin standard tolerance and confirm it in writing with the quotation.
Why does the measuring position matter
Thickness at the edge and at the centre of a strip are not always identical. Agreeing the measuring position removes the most common cause of a disputed delivery.
Does levelling change the thickness
Levelling changes shape rather than section. It matters here because a strip with coil set gives inconsistent thickness readings even when the rolled gauge is correct.
