Reading the Cold Rolled Grade Families

Cold rolled carbon steel strip is graded mainly by how far it can be formed. The commercial quality grade is used for flat and lightly formed parts, the drawing quality grade for moderate forming and the deep drawing grades for shells and housings that are pulled hard. Every national standard names those families differently.

Choosing Between SPCC SPCD and SPCE

• SPCC is commercial quality. Use it for flat parts, brackets, panels and light forming.
• SPCD is drawing quality with more elongation. Use it where the part is drawn but not severely.
• SPCE is deep drawing quality. Use it for shells, cups and housings with a high draw ratio.

If a trial part cracks, the grade is only one of the variables. Temper, surface condition and lubrication all matter. Send us the failed sample and the draw ratio and we will look at all of them.

Cold rolled steel foil and coil is produced from 0.035 mm to 0.8 mm thick in widths from 50 mm to 520 mm. Below 0.1 mm the strip behaves like a foil, so flatness, coil tension and packing become part of the specification rather than an afterthought.
