The Short Version
Choose stainless when the finished part must resist corrosion through its whole section or must act as a spring. Choose cold rolled carbon steel when cost and deep drawing matter and the part will be coated or protected. Choose chrome plated steel when you need a bright plated surface on thin carbon steel strip.

- Will the finished part be exposed to moisture or chemicals in service, and for how long
- Is there a coating or plating step already in your process
- How severe is the forming operation, measured by draw ratio or bend radius
- Does the part need to spring back or stay put
- Is the surface visible in the finished assembly
- What is the annual volume, since material cost differences scale with it
