Maintenance Guide
Packing Handling and Storage of Precision Steel Coil
Thin strip is easy to damage after it leaves the mill. This guide covers what to specify for packing and what to control in your own warehouse.

Why Packing Is Part of the Specification
Yongxin packs coils per customer requirement rather than to a single house standard, because a coil that suits an overhead crane and a mandrel decoiler is packed differently from one that has to be moved on a pallet truck. State what your plant can handle and the packing will be built around it.
What to Tell Us
- Maximum coil weight your handling equipment accepts
- Inner diameter required by your decoiler mandrel
- Maximum outer diameter your equipment can take
- Whether coils are handled eye to sky or eye to wall
- Wrapping, moisture protection and pallet requirements
- Marking, labelling and language required for customs and for your incoming inspection
Receiving a Coil
- Check the outer wrapping for tears and water marks before it is moved inside
- Confirm the coil marking matches the packing list and the mill test certificate
- Leave the wrapping on until the coil has reached the temperature of the storage area, since condensation on cold steel is the most common cause of surface rust after shipment
- Record any transit damage with photographs immediately, because that record is what makes a claim workable
Storing Precision Strip
- Store indoors in a dry area with stable temperature rather than in a yard or against an external wall
- Keep coils off the floor on racks or dunnage so damp cannot wick into the packaging
- Do not stack thin strip coils on top of each other unless the packing was designed for it, since edge damage from stacking is not repairable
- Use older coils first so material does not sit for long periods
- Keep the mill test certificate with the coil, or at least the traceable coil number, so a later question can be traced back
Handling on the Line
- Support the coil eye correctly on the mandrel, since an unsupported thin coil telescopes easily
- Set decoiler tension carefully, because thin strip stretches under tension that would be harmless at thicker gauge
- Keep gloves and tooling clean when the strip has a specified surface, particularly if the next process is plating or bonding
- Do not remove strapping while the coil is unsupported
If Something Arrives Wrong
Send photographs, the coil number and the measured values with the position they were taken. Because rolling, annealing, levelling, slitting and testing all sit inside one plant, a query can be traced back through the process record rather than passed between subcontractors.
