How to Choose a Thermal Transfer Ribbon Wax Wax Resin or Resin

Ribbon selection is two separate decisions that people tend to merge. The first is which ink system to use, and the label material answers that. The second is which physical roll to buy, and the printer answers that.

Rule One The Substrate Picks the Ink

• Printing on a paper label: choose a wax ribbon.
• Printing on a PP synthetic paper label or a glossy paper label: choose a wax resin ribbon.
• Printing on PET, PVC or similar film: choose a resin ribbon.
• Printing on polyester satin or another garment tape: choose a wash care resin ribbon.

Wax ribbons suit semi-gloss coated paper, thermal paper, woodfree paper, kraft paper, tags and price labels. Wax resin covers all of those plus matte coated paper and PP synthetic paper. Resin covers semi-gloss coated paper, PET, PVC, PE and PP.

Rule Two The Printer Picks the Roll

The printer decides three things about the ribbon, and none of them can be adjusted after the roll is made:

• The maximum ribbon width and length the machine accepts.
• The ink side, whether the coating must face out or in.
• Whether the machine takes a flat head ribbon or a near edge ribbon.

Ribbons are available from 30 mm to 110 mm wide and 30 m to 900 m long, on 0.5 in or 1 in cores, ink in or ink out. Give the printer model with the enquiry and the roll is built to it.

What Goes Wrong

The two failures that come back most often are a wax ribbon used on a film label, where the print rubs away with a thumb, and a resin ribbon used on plain paper, where the ribbon budget doubles for no benefit and the print head runs hotter than it needs to.

A third, less obvious failure is a ribbon much wider than the label. The unused ink wastes money and the unsupported ribbon edge can crease and wrinkle the print.

Test Before You Commit

Free material samples are supplied for exactly this reason. Print on your own labels, on your own printer, then run the test that matters: a thumb rub for handling, a tape pull for adhesion, a wash cycle for a care label, or a solvent wipe for a chemical container.

Minimum order is 20 rolls and production runs 7 to 15 days after the deposit, so there is time to test properly before the order is placed.
