Pattern Count Is a Dial Not a Technology
A seven, eight or nine pattern gun has that many settings on the rotating head: typically jet, flat, shower, mist, cone, centre and full. The mechanism underneath is the same. Pattern count is a merchandising step, which is why the same body in this catalogue appears with seven, eight and nine pattern heads at different price points.
Four Settings Do Almost All the Work
In practice most customers use jet for rinsing paths and cars, shower for beds and borders, mist for seedlings and hanging baskets, and flat for washing down furniture. The remaining settings sell the product on shelf. Knowing this helps when you decide which gun to put at eye level.
Adjustable Nozzles Are a Different Product
An adjustable nozzle twists between jet and spray with no dial and no trigger. It is cheaper, smaller and it belongs at the bottom of the wall or bundled with a hose set. It is not a low pattern count gun, it is a simpler product for a different buyer.

Does a nine pattern gun water better than a seven pattern gun?
Not meaningfully. It gives the customer more settings and it reads as the premium option on shelf. The flow and the trigger mechanism are the same family.
What is the difference between a nozzle and a gun?
A nozzle twists to change the stream and has no trigger. A gun has a trigger and usually a pattern dial. They serve different price points and different customers.
