What Pile Weight Actually Measures

Pile weight is the yarn in a square metre of mat, quoted in g/m2. More yarn means more fibre standing between a shoe and the mat backing, so the mat both absorbs more and takes longer to crush flat. Our nylon logo mats run in four constructions: 400g/m2, 650g/m2, 800g/m2 and 950g/m2.

Pile Height Moves With Pile Weight

The four constructions are not just heavier versions of each other. FH-400N is a tufted pile at 3.5mm. FH-650N, FH-800N and FH-950N are twisted piles at 4mm, 5mm and 7mm. A twisted pile recovers better under repeated foot traffic, which is why the heavier constructions all use it.

Matching Construction To Traffic

A quiet interior office door and a street-facing shop entrance are different problems. Lighter constructions suit interior positions and lower footfall; heavier ones suit main entrances where the mat is the first thing that takes weather and grit off a shoe. If you are standardising across a network, specify by position rather than picking one construction for every site.

Why Solution Dyeing Matters More Than Pile Weight For Colour

Pile weight governs wear, not colour life. Fading is governed by how the colour got into the fibre. Our logo and mat are solution dyed rather than surface printed, and colour fastness is graded 4 to 4.5, which is why a mat in a sunlit lobby holds its logo rather than washing out over a season.

What The Backing Contributes

The back material is normal rubber or nitrile rubber at 1.2 to 2mm thickness. Nitrile is the choice where oil or fuel may reach the mat. Back thickness is what stops a mat curling at the corners, which is the failure that turns an entrance mat into a trip hazard.
