Mat Backing Materials Explained

Nitrile Rubber

Used where oil and fuel reach the mat: garage and pit mats, and the backing on our nylon entrance logo mats at 1.2 to 2mm thickness. It resists oil rather than softening under it, and it is heavy enough to keep a mat flat under tyre load.

TPR

A thermoplastic rubber backing. Anti-slip like nitrile but lighter and easier to roll, which is why it suits mats that travel to events and displays. It also appears on printed area rugs and kids rugs where weight and shipping cost matter.

Latex

A high-density latex bottom gives grip plus moisture resistance and resists deformation. On drum mats this is what stops a kit creeping forward during a set. On tufted rugs the cotton and latex backing adds sound and damp insulation.

TPE

Used where the mat is in a wet area and has to stay flexible: bath mats use a TPE backing for traction on tile, and it is one of the options on printed chair mats and kids rugs.

SBR And Foam Cores

On anti fatigue mats the backing is SBR and the structural work is done by the PU foam core between it and the PVC surface. The 3/4in high-density core is what takes load off feet, knees, legs and back, and it is specified not to lose support over time.

Non-Woven Cloth And Action Back

Lighter backings for indoor use where grip demands are lower. Non-woven cloth appears on printed area rugs and round kids rugs. Action back is an option on indoor entrance mats where the mat sits on a hard floor and is lifted for cleaning.
