Designing joints between large-format aluminium panels
Joint width between large panels is not only an appearance decision. Too narrow and the panels bind during installation or as they expand; too wide and the elevation loses its visual continuity. The joint has to absorb fabrication tolerance, installation tolerance and thermal movement together. Since aluminium expands appreciably over a long run, joint widths on a large facade are calculated from the panel length and the expected temperature range rather than chosen by eye.
