Stainless steel does not rust, but things left on it do. Almost every complaint about a stainless sink traces back to something that sat on the surface too long.
Why rust spots appear on steel that cannot rust
Iron particles from steel wool, from a cast iron pan, or from site dust settle on the surface and corrode there.
The spot looks like the sink is rusting; it is the deposit rusting on top of the passive layer.
Rinse and wipe after use and the problem largely disappears.
What actually damages the surface
Bleach and chlorine left standing — particularly in the bowl overnight.
Salt and acidic food left in a wet bowl.
Steel wool, which both scratches the finish and leaves iron behind.
Rubber mats that trap water underneath them for days.
Brushed finishes
Wipe along the grain, not across it.
A neutral detergent and a soft cloth is all a brushed sink needs.
Dry after use in hard water areas; the marks people call scratches are usually limescale.
PVD and nano coated finishes
Treat a PVD or nano surface as a finish, not as bare steel.
Neutral detergent, soft cloth, no abrasive cream, no scouring pad, no strong acid descaler.
Rinse and dry after use to avoid scale rings, which are harder to remove without abrasives.

How do I remove an existing rust spot?
A non-abrasive stainless cleaner applied along the grain usually lifts it. Do not attack it with steel wool — that is what caused it.
Is a bottom grid worth it?
Yes, if pans go in the sink daily. It keeps cookware off the bowl floor where wear shows most.
Can PVD finishes be repaired?
No. A damaged PVD surface cannot be touched up, which is why the care instructions matter.
