What The Two Fibres Do

Polyester carries the print, the colour fastness and the abrasion resistance. Spandex carries the stretch and the recovery, which is the ability to go back to shape rather than to bag out at the knee. A legging is a compromise between those two jobs, and the balance is what makes one legging feel like a training garment and another feel like a fashion piece.

Why Recovery Matters More Than Stretch

Buyers test stretch by pulling the fabric. Customers experience recovery, which is what happens after a day of wear. A fabric that stretches far but recovers badly is the one that generates complaints about sagging knees and a waistband that will not stay up. Ask for a sample and wear it for a full day before you approve it.

Print Behaviour On A Stretch Knit

Print on a stretch fabric is printed flat and then worn stretched, so the design opens up in wear. On a heavily stretched area, a fine line becomes a thick line and a dense pattern becomes a pale one. This is why the sample matters more than the artwork file: the file cannot show you what the print looks like under tension.

Questions Worth Asking A Supplier

Rather than asking what the fabric is called, ask what the composition split is, what the finished weight is, how the fabric behaves after five washes, and whether the same fabric will be available for a repeat order. If any answer is not published, that is not automatically a problem, but it should be confirmed on the sample before bulk rather than assumed.
