Importing Painting Tools From China A Checklist

Most import problems are not manufacturing problems. They are things nobody wrote down. Here is the list we work through with new buyers.

Before You Ask For A Price

A quotation is only as good as the brief behind it. Four things turn a vague enquiry into a price you can actually compare with another supplier's.

  • The items, by reference where possible
  • Approximate annual and first order quantities
  • The pack format: bulk carton, sleeve, hang pack or multipack
  • The destination port and the incoterm you want quoted

Settle The Specification In Writing

Roller covers in particular are easy to under-specify. Two covers described as nine inch acrylic can behave completely differently in the same paint.

Write down the fabric, the nap, the frame system, the core, the stripe grading and the pack. Then have a physical sample signed against it.

FabricAcrylic, polyester, microfibre or foam
NapStated length and how it is measured
Frame systemCage, push-in or threaded
GradingStripe colour and what it means on your shelf
PackSleeve, hang tab, barcode and carton count

Ask The Documentation Question Early

The worst time to discover a market requires a specific declaration is after the container has arrived. Ask before production, not before shipping.

A supplier who answers this question plainly, including saying no, is worth more than one who says yes to everything.

We do not publish certification claims on this site. Ask us about a specific item and market and you will get a written answer before you order.

Plan The Load Before You Confirm

Painting tools are light and bulky in some formats and dense in others. PPE stacks well. Furniture is almost pure volume. Which of those you combine decides what your freight actually costs per unit.

Ask for a loading model with the quotation rather than after it. It often changes which pack format you choose.

Control The Reorder

The first order gets attention from everybody. The third one is where ranges quietly drift. Control it with the same signed sample you approved at the start.

  • Hold a signed physical sample on both sides
  • Check goods-in against the sample, not against the invoice
  • Require written notice before any material or process change
  • Keep the artwork and the dieline with the specification

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common mistake first-time importers make?

Under-specifying the product and then comparing prices as if two different products were the same thing.

Should I ask for an inspection?

If it matters to you, agree it in the order confirmation and say what will be checked. An inspection with no agreed standard proves nothing.

How do I compare quotations fairly?

Insist on the same specification, the same pack and the same incoterm on both. Otherwise you are comparing three variables at once.

What if I only want a small first order?

Say so. A small first order that ships alongside other lines is far more workable than one that has to justify a container on its own.
