Why plating wears where it wears, what to specify on an order, and the care advice to give your customers.

Where plating goes first

Not evenly. It goes at the points that rub: the underside of a ring shank, the shoulders where a ring meets the next finger, the inside of a bracelet clasp, the back of a pendant that sits against clothing. If you are assessing a sample, look at those places rather than at the top of the piece.

Specify thickness per product, not per order

There is no single correct plating thickness for a catalogue. A stud earring sits in an ear and barely rubs. A chain rubs against itself with every step. We specify plating on the quotation for the product rather than publishing one figure across the site, and you should ask for that figure in writing.

Yellow, white and rose

All three are run here. Rose gold reads warmer in photography than it does in person, which is worth knowing when you are shooting a listing. White gold plating over a silver-coloured body hides wear longer than yellow gold over brass, simply because the colour underneath is closer.

The care advice worth printing on the card

Put jewelry on last, after perfume, hairspray and moisturiser. Take it off before swimming, showering and sleeping. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth after wearing. Store pieces separately rather than loose in one box, because plated pieces scratch each other. This advice costs nothing to include and materially extends the life of a plated piece.
