How to Order OEM Jewelry From a Chinese Factory

The sequence from first enquiry to shipment, and the points where orders usually go wrong.

Start with a specification, not a price question

An email asking for a price on a gold ring cannot be answered. An email that says brass body, 18K yellow gold plated, 6mm cubic zirconia, size 7, 500 pieces can be quoted the same day. The more of the specification you fix up front, the less of it gets fixed for you.

Sample before bulk, always

The sample is the cheapest correction you will ever make. Approve a physical piece, not a rendering, and keep the approved sample - it is the reference every later order is judged against.

Understand what the mould does to your costs

The first order carries the tooling. The second does not, because the mould stays with your account. This is why splitting a design across two suppliers is usually a false economy.

Ask what happens between casting and packing. Here that is 6 rounds of inspection carried out by a 10 person quality team. If a supplier cannot describe their inspection sequence, they probably do not have one.

Payment and shipping

Expect a deposit to release production and the balance before shipment. Agree the shipping method, the incoterm and who books the forwarder at quotation stage rather than after the goods are packed.
