Width, length, clasp and plating - the four things that decide whether a Cuban chain sells.
Width sets the customer
Narrow Cuban chains read as jewelry and sell to a broad audience. Wide chains read as statement pieces and sell to a narrower, more committed one. The catalogue covers both, including the heavier Miami Cuban builds.
Length
For men, 18 to 24 inches covers most retail demand, with 20 and 22 the volume sizes. For women wearing a Cuban chain as a collarbone piece, shorter. Length is made to order rather than fixed.
The clasp is the failure point
Weight plus a weak clasp equals a chain on the floor. Box clasps are the right answer on a heavy chain and are what these are built with. A spring ring on a wide Cuban chain is a warning sign about the rest of the build.
Plating and the base underneath
Cuban links rub against each other constantly, which is the hardest wear any plated piece takes. White gold and yellow gold plating over brass or silver are the standard builds. Ask what the base metal is - on a heavy chain it changes both the price and the lifespan.
