Planning a Marine Repower
Most of the cost of a repower is yard time, not the engine. The checks that save that time all happen before the order is placed.
Start With The Shaft Line
The reduction ratio of the marine gear and the propeller decide which engine rating actually works in the hull. Record the existing gearbox, its ratio and the propeller data before shortlisting an engine, and send them with the enquiry so the configuration is checked against them.
Check Weight and Envelope Against The Bed
Every marine engine on this site publishes its net weight with flywheel and alternator and its overall dimensions. Comparing those against the existing bed and engine room access is the cheapest hour of the whole project.
Confirm The Cooling Arrangement
Marine units in the catalogue are listed with their cooling method, for example a sea water pump with heat exchanger, or jacket water aftercooling. The arrangement has to match what the hull can provide.
Class Paperwork
Where the vessel is in class, the certification matters as much as the rating. Marine engines carrying CCS or IMO certificates state that on their product page. If the paperwork is needed, confirm it before the order is placed.
