Mechanical or Electronic Cummins Engines
The catalogue covers both mechanically governed engines and electronically controlled ones. Which suits a machine depends on the controls it already has, the emission market and who will service it.
What Separates The Two Groups
The B, C, L, NT, NTA, KT and KTA families use mechanical fuel systems, most often a PT pump or an in-line pump with a mechanical governor. The QSB, QSC, QSL, QSM, QSK, QST, ISB, ISD, ISL, ISM and ISZ families use electronic control with common rail or electronically metered injection. Each product page states the fuel system and the governor type as published by the source data sheet.
Where Mechanical Engines Still Win
Mechanical engines can be diagnosed and repaired without diagnostic software, which matters on remote sites and in markets where trained electronic support is scarce. They also drop into older machines without a control interface to match.
Where Electronic Control Pays
Electronic engines hold speed more accurately under block load, which is why generator sets increasingly use them, and they are the route to Euro IV and above for on-highway vehicles. Fuel consumption figures are usually better for the same output.
Check Before Ordering
If an engine is replacing an existing unit, the controls, wiring and the instrument panel have to agree with the new engine. Send the details of the machine with your enquiry so the configuration is checked first.
