Why Compliance Decides The Launch
Many manufacturers can produce goods. Far fewer understand international trade logistics and export regulation well enough to keep a shipment moving.
Poor compliance does not simply mean a delayed launch. It means customs rejections, product seizures or expensive legal recalls, all of which land after you have paid for the goods.
The Marks That Cover Europe
CE marking confirms a device complies with the essential European health, safety and environmental protection legislation. Without it, the product does not lawfully reach a European shelf.
The RoHS directive covers what is inside the electronics, guaranteeing they are free from specified hazardous substances. Together the two are the minimum entry requirement for the European market.
The United States and Medical Claims
FDA registration and clearances matter most where a device makes medical claims. The stringency of the US market is directly related to what your marketing copy says the product does.
This is why the compliance conversation has to include your claims, not just your hardware. A device that would pass as a massager can fail as a treatment device purely on the strength of its own packaging text.
Quality Management Behind The Product
ISO 13485 covers the factory quality management standard rather than a single product. Buyers increasingly ask for it because it says something about how consistently the plant works, not just what one sample looked like.
Technical documentation, test reports and factory quality management standards should be aligned before a shipment leaves the port, not assembled afterwards.
Region Specific Gatekeepers
Compliance is not one size fits all. Beyond the standard marks, different territories have their own requirements: KC certification for South Korea, TGA approval for Australia, and FCC and IEC 60601 for electrical and electromagnetic safety.
Tell your manufacturer every market you intend to sell into, not just the first one. Retro-fitting a mark to a device already in production is the most expensive way to discover this.
