Stones are bought for the job rather than pulled from a fixed inventory, which is what makes it possible to quote the same design at three price points. The important part is what gets written down: a certified centre stone has a report and an inscription to check it against, a matched row has a lot specification, and natural material like jadeite has photographs of the actual piece with its characteristics marked.

Size, grade, origin, treatment tolerance and, for coloured stones, how it must read at arm's length rather than under a lamp.
Sourcing
Bought per order.
Certified stones against a report; coloured stones and jade selected on the material.
Verification
The report matched to the stone.
Girdle inscription checked against the certificate number before setting.
Matching
The real work on multi-stone pieces.
Stones hand selected to match in colour, clarity and cut, laid out and approved before the first one is set.
Disclosure
What is not certified is said.
Where no figure or grade is published, it is stated as not published rather than estimated.
