What The Numbers Actually Mean

18K is 75 percent pure gold, which is why it is also written as 750. 14K is 58.5 percent. 9K and 10K are lower again. The rest of the alloy is what sets the colour and the hardness: copper for rose, palladium or nickel for white, silver and zinc in between. The pieces in this range carry 750 markings where the source publishes them.

Colour Is The Reason Most Markets Choose 18K

More gold means a deeper, warmer yellow and a richer rose. 14K yellow reads paler. In white gold the difference is smaller because both are rhodium plated, but the plating wears off both and what shows through underneath is warmer on 14K.

Hardness Runs The Other Way

14K is harder and more scratch resistant than 18K, which matters on a wide band worn daily, on a bangle, and on anything with an engraved surface that will be rubbed. 18K is softer, holds a higher polish, and is easier to work and to resize.

Where Silver Belongs
