A jewellery prototype developed in CAD, so a piece can be reproduced exactly by a computer-controlled process instead of rebuilt from scratch.

The CAD model is the master record. It fixes stone seats, wall thickness and gallery openings, and once it exists the piece can be reproduced using a computer-controlled production process rather than carved again by hand. That is what makes a repeat order genuinely repeatable, and it is also where the cost of a design is decided rather than discovered.

Referencia

Anything that shows intent.

A sketch, a photograph, a vector file or an existing piece.

Working Drawing

Dimensions before geometry.

Stone sizes, finished dimensions and metal weight marked on a scaled drawing.

3D Model

The decisions that cost money.

Seats, wall thickness, gallery openings and prong positions are all set in the model.

Render And Review

See it before it exists.

The design team presents sketches or 3D renderings for approval.

Wax

The last cheap change.

Wax is injected into the mould cavity under pressure and can be held and sized.

Master Record

Kept, so it can be made again.

The approved model is the thing a repeat order is built from.

Can you work from a photograph of an existing piece?

From your own design or your own commission, yes. Not from another brand's protected design.

Do I get the CAD file?

Ask at brief stage. File ownership is a commercial point, and it should be settled in writing before the model is built rather than after.

What does a render not show me?

Weight, and how it sits on a hand. A render will not tell you that a shank is thin or a shoulder is wide. That is what the wax stage is for.

Can a CAD model be scaled to another size?

Mostly, but not blindly. Stone seats do not scale with the band, so a resized model is re-checked rather than simply stretched.
