A stairwell is the one place in a building where a light fitting is seen from three heights at once. From the ground floor it is seen from below, from the stair it is seen edge on while moving, and from the landing it is seen from above. A design that composes well in one of those views can look like nothing at all in the other two.

That pushed the design towards a vertically composed fixture with depth rather than a single plane. Depth gives the piece something to show from every angle and, on a stair, gives the eye something that changes as you climb.

The constraint underneath it was the drop. A stairwell has no single ceiling height, so the suspension had to be set against the topmost fixing point and the lowest safe clearance over the stair at the same time — a number that comes from the building rather than from the catalogue.
