A heel guard run set into stone paving
A drainage run crossing the walking route into a building, without catching heels, cane tips or castors and without interrupting the paving.
The run crossed the main pedestrian approach to a building, which made slot width a safety decision rather than a hydraulic one. Heel guard grating closed the slot down and recovered the lost drainage area through additional slots rather than wider ones.
The second constraint was the paving. A grating run set into stone reads as an interruption unless the panel module lines up with the paving module, so panel lengths were set against the stone coursing rather than against a standard size.
The frame was made with the panels and bedded to the same line as the surrounding stone, because a threshold that people look at is judged on whether it sits level with what surrounds it long before anyone considers the drainage.
