How to choose whiteboard steel for magnetic boards

Erasability after a year, magnetic holding force and the face finish are the three things that decide a board, and all three are set at the coil.

Judge a writing surface by erasability after twelve months of use, not by how it wipes when new. Every coated surface wipes cleanly on day one. The difference appears when marker pigment has had a year to work into the surface.

Magnetic holding force is a steel substrate question rather than a coating one, and it is affected by the thickness of both. A thinner substrate with a thicker coating holds a magnet less well, which users interpret as a poor board even though the writing surface is fine.

Face finish then decides the market. Plain white is the default; green and black serve chalk markets; gridded faces serve technical teaching. All are available on the same substrate, which means a board factory can serve several markets from one coil specification.
