What semi-finished cable means and where it stops

A semi-finished core is everything up to but not including the outer jacket, and the handover point is the buyer's to choose.

A semi-finished coaxial core is conductor, foamed dielectric and shielding, with no outer jacket. A semi-finished LAN core is the twisted pairs, with no jacket. In both cases everything that determines electrical performance has been done, and everything that determines appearance and branding has not.

That division exists because the two halves need different things. The electrical half needs a foaming line, a tight handle on concentricity and a shielding process. The branding half needs a jacket extruder, a printer and a marketing decision about colour. Very few plants are equally good at both, and the foaming line is the bottleneck in most of them.

The handover point is negotiable. Some buyers take a bare core and do their own shielding; some take a shielded core and only jacket; some take the core plus the materials and machine to finish it themselves. We quote against whichever point you choose rather than assuming one.
