FFCs are flat flexible ribbon-shaped cables with multiple metallic conductors sandwiched between two insulating tapes. They are used extensively in consumer electronic products such as digital cameras, audio equipment, flat-screen televisions and office equipment. Shielded flexible flat cable (FFC) for automotive application use include high density mounting and fine lead pitch, improved flexibility and handing ability, high heat resistance PVC (105°C / 221°F) and low connection resistance.
Tin / lead alloy solder was formerly used on FFC conductors, but ongoing Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in electrical and electronic equipment requirements have led to lead-free FFCs. The drawback of applying lead-free electroplated tin to FFC conductors is that tin whiskers form in the area between the FFC and the connector. This can cause short circuits and arcing in electrical equipment. To address this, HCA has developed a tin-plated conductor with reduced tin whiskering based on applying a very thin “nano” coating of zinc on the electroplated tin.
