Powderless etching explained
What powdering used to do mechanically, an additive now does chemically and continuously.
Older etching machines protected side walls by dusting the plate with a powder between passes. The powder adhered to the walls and slowed lateral attack, but it was applied intermittently, in discrete passes, and the result depended heavily on the operator's timing and the machine's condition.
Powderless etching replaces that with an additive dissolved in the bath, which forms the same protection continuously as new wall is exposed. Because the protection is never absent, the result is more uniform and far less dependent on when the operator intervened.
The machine changes accordingly. Instead of a powdering mechanism it needs controlled circulation, spray pattern and temperature, because those are now what determine how much fresh etchant reaches the floor of the etch compared with the walls.
The three parts — plate, additive and machine — only work as a set. This is the single most common reason a workshop upgrading from powdering gets disappointing first results: the new machine is run with an additive designed for a different process or a plate from a different producer.
