A4VSO compared with A10VO
A practical comparison of the two axial piston families, covering size range, typical machines, duty and what to expect from a rotary group.
A4VSO and A10VO are both swashplate axial piston pumps, but they answer different questions. The A4VSO is an industrial frame built for continuous duty on power units and presses, available in sizes from 28 to 500. The A10VO is a compact mobile frame from 16 to 140, designed to sit on an excavator or skid steer where space and weight matter more than duty cycle.
The practical consequence is in the rotary group. An A4VSO group carries more mass and larger bearings because it is expected to run for years at near-constant pressure. An A10VO group is lighter and tolerates the load reversals of a mobile machine, but it will not survive being installed in a continuous industrial application just because the displacement matches.
When a customer asks whether one can substitute for the other, the answer is almost always no. The mounting, shaft, ports and control are different, and even where an adapter could be made, the duty expectation built into the parts is not the same.
