Water tightness validation on a container and closure pair
A container and its closure validated as a pair, because neither part can be proven watertight on its own.
Leakage in a container and closure system is a property of the interface, not of either part. A closure that measures correctly can still leak against a container that also measures correctly, if the two tolerances happen to stack the wrong way.
Validation was therefore run on paired parts across the tolerance range rather than on nominal samples. That means deliberately assembling the worst permitted combinations and testing those, which is the only test that says anything about production.
The result fed back into the tools rather than into an inspection limit, because tightening inspection on a design that leaks at the tolerance extremes only moves the problem to the yield figure.
